What SMS did to the mobile industry, Instant Messaging did to the chatting world. Consider how people communicated over the internet a decade ago. There were just two mediums of communication using the internet before the new millennium. Either you sent an email and waited for the recipient to access it and send back a reply or you used a community chat room like ICQ.
Then the world went for a revamp of communication solutions with the introduction of Yahoo Instant Messenger Service. It offered users a chance to send messages in real time to each other just like an email without any delay in reception or delivery.
Now, you can find Gtalk, Windows Live, AOL, Yahoo and the likes all offering a similar kind of service. The only change that has taken place is addition of extra services. For example, with Google you have the ability to receive email updates and archive your old chat messages for later reference. With Yahoo, video chat is smooth and just as good as Skype. With Windows Live a player on XBOX 360 can communicate inside the game with a friend on a mobile phone. Moreover, all these IM options now offer on the fly communication through cell phone applications.
