With much of the East Coast hunkered down under cold and rain, I?ve been thinking a lot about the kinds of things we like to eat when it?s ugly outside. Chilly, damp weather always makes my family crave something warm and filling.

Dishes that simmer on their own for a while, like this slow cooker chicken noodle soup recipe, are ideal for a rainy afternoon lunch at home. Some dishes take even longer to cook, and there?s something very rewarding about tossing a pile of ingredients in the crock pot in the morning and coming home to a ready meal. Stews and braises are classic fall food. Slow cooking is a good way to take advantage of inexpensive, tough cuts of meat that have lots of flavor, but there are also plenty of vegetarian dishes that fit the bill as well.

In addition to the all-day stews, there are plenty of quick and easy soup recipes for fall. Nothing else fills you up and warms you from the inside like a bowl of hot vegetable soup with a melty, gooey grilled cheese sandwich. There are also lots of sustainable seafood options in fall, and I find that homemade clam chowder can drive away the worst chill.

For dessert, whip up a batch of mini apple pies. Baked fruit dishes are a great way to use produce that you stored in the warmer months by canning or freezing, and they tend to be quick to make.

Personally, I love to make baked casseroles when the weather is bad. Homemade macaroni and cheese is a crowd-pleaser, as are other old classics like scalloped potatoes.

Of course, not everything that warms you has to be a hearty dish. The right drink can really make the difference between cold and miserable and warm and comfortable. This can be the perfect cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, or something more unique to fall. It?s very easy to make your own spiced apple cider with your favorite seasonal spices ? I like to use cinnamon, black cardamom, and allspice. Nutmeg, cloves, and orange or lemon juice are other possibilities for this great beverage.

If you have to go out into the cold and wet, have something warm and comforting waiting for you back at home. I promise it will make even the worst weather seem like no trouble at all.

1092 human genomes sequenced to determine standard range of human genetic variation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Completing the second phase of the 1000 Genomes Project, a multinational team of scientists reports that they have sampled a total of 1092 individuals from 14 different populations and sequenced their full genomes. The researchers described the feat as a collegial effort to equip biologists and physicians with information that can be used to understand the normal range of human genetic variants so that a patient's disease genome can be interpreted in a broader context.

A report on the research, published online in Nature on Nov. 1 represents the culmination of five years of work, says Aravinda Chakravarti, Ph.D., professor of medicine and pediatrics and a member of the Institute of Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Chakravarti helped to design the population genetics sampling plan.

"The DNA donors in the study were not known to have any diseases, so the study gives us the genomic background we need for understanding which genetic variations are 'within the normal range,'" Chakravarti says. "With this tool, scientists now have a standard with which they can compare the genome of someone with diabetes, for example." That in turn, Chakravarti says, will increase opportunities for understanding the disease and creating targeted, individualized treatment.

The selection of the 14 populations sampled was based on their ancient migratory history and their genetic relationship to the other populations studied. Within each population, healthy, unrelated donors were randomly chosen for blood draws. The blood samples were first transformed into cell lines that can be stored and grown indefinitely so that they will always be available for future studies. After cell lines were grown, the DNA was sequenced and added to a public database.

The first human genome to be sequenced, published in 2003, made clear that as much as 98.5 percent of human genetic material does not encode proteins, as had been thought. Scientists now know the role of some of the non-protein-coding regions and, although much of the genome remains a mystery, there is reason to suspect that at least some of it plays a part in the variability seen in disease susceptibility and prevalence.

"The 1000 Genomes Project started at the beginning, with the whole genome and with no bias in the search for disease-related variants toward protein-coding genes," Chakravarti explains. "Regulatory sequences and sequences we still don't understand were also catalogued, so this information widens the areas of the genome we can search when looking for disease-causing variants." Most of the genetics research done to date has begun with a disease or a protein that is known to be malfunctioning, followed by a hunt for the responsible genetic variants.

The genetic variations found in the populations analyzed were categorized by how frequently they appeared in the individuals tested. Variants seen in more than five percent of the samples were classified as common variants, while low-frequency variants appeared in 0.5 to five percent of individuals and rare variants in less than 0.5 percent of the samples.

The 14 populations sampled were divided into four ancestry groups: European, African, East Asian and American. As expected, most of the common variants had already been identified in previous studies, and their frequencies varied little between ancestry groups.

By contrast, 58 percent of the low-frequency variants and 87 percent of the rare variants were described for the first time in this study. Rare variants were sometimes twice as likely to be found within a particular population as in that population's broader ancestry group. Different populations also showed different numbers of rare variants, with the Spanish, Finnish and African-American populations carrying the greatest number of them.

Amazingly, Chakravarti says, the researchers found that among rare variants, the healthy people in their study possessed as many as 130 to 400 protein-altering variants; 10 to 20 variants that destroy the function of the proteins they encode; two to five variants that damage protein function; and one or two variants associated with cancer. The implication is that all healthy people everywhere carry similar numbers of rare, deleterious variants.

Several factors allow people to survive with so many errors in our genome, Chakravarti explains. One factor is that genes occur in pairs, yet our bodies often only require one normal copy to work. Another is that a "redundant" gene elsewhere in the genome can sometimes compensate for a specific deficiency. In addition, some deleterious genes are only turned on in response to certain environmental cues that a particular individual may never encounter.

The first phase of the 1000 Genomes Project, led by Chakravarti, Peter Donnelly at Oxford and David Altshuler at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, was completed in 2008. It was a preliminary probe into the genomes of a subset of the individuals sequenced for this second phase and proved to be illuminating in searching for genetic markers of disease. The final phase of the project will involve sequencing the genomes of 1500 more individuals from 11 more populations.

More than 100 authors from 111 institutions worldwide contributed to this study. This work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and many other international funding agencies.

Study: Flood of money leaving China

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese investors evaded government controls to move more than $600 billion out of the country last year and the outflow is increasing, fueling economic and political risks as communist leaders prepare for a handover of power, a Washington-based monitoring group says.

The study by Global Financial Integrity gives backing to anecdotal signs of huge, unreported movements of Chinese money out of the country. Experts say the outflows are driven by public frustration with a banking system that subsidizes state companies at the expense of savers and by businesses profiting from loopholes in the government's pervasive economic controls.

Chinese companies are widely believed to move money abroad both to invest and to "round trip" back into the country disguised as foreign investment to win tax breaks and other incentives. Chinese families move money abroad to gain a better return than they can from state banks that pay low deposit rates.

Last year's outflow was part of a $3.8 trillion flood of capital that left China over 11 years, Global Financial Integrity said. It said the amount rose from $172.6 billion in 2000 to $602.9 billion in 2011.

The group said it was unclear how much of the money came from corruption or other crimes but it said the illicit outflow could aggravate economic and political strains by aiding tax evasion and widening China's sensitive wealth gap.

The study "raises serious questions about the stability of the Chinese economy," the group said in a statement.

"The social, political, and economic order is not sustainable in the long-run given such massive illicit outflows," said Dev Kar, the group's chief economist and a co-author of the report, in the statement.

Global Financial Integrity, a program of the Center for International Policy, studies illegal cross-border flows of money and promotes measures to stop them.

Some commentators have suggested the outflows reflect a loss of faith by China's financial elite in the communist government but others say much of the money is sent back into the country disguised as foreign investment.

"While the funds could be earned through bribery, kickbacks, or other illicit activities, they may well be earned through legitimate means," said Global Financial Integrity. "It is the transfer in contravention of capital controls or the nonpayment of applicable taxes that renders the funds illicit."

Some of the outflow also might be the proceeds of bribe-taking and other government corruption. Stories of officials who move their families and ill-gotten assets abroad are so common that Chinese Internet users have coined a name for them ? "naked officials."

Public concern about chronic corruption and China's slowing economy are political risks for the ruling Communist Party as it prepares for a once-a-decade handover of power to younger leaders.

A survey released last week by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found half of Chinese people who responded cited corrupt officials as a major problem, up from 39 percent four years ago. Forty-eight percent cited the wealth gap as a major problem, up from 41 percent in 2008.

Global Financial Integrity said 86 percent of the money moved abroad, or $3.2 trillion, was moved out of China through "trade misinvoicing," under which Chinese companies arrange with foreign suppliers to overcharge for imported goods and deposit the extra money abroad.

Chinese economists have said a large share of the country's foreign direct investment from financial centers such as the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg or Hong Kong is money that was first sent abroad by Chinese companies.

Global Financial Integrity said that one financial center, the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, has just 28,000 people but accounted for $213.7 billion in officially reported investment in China in 2010.

"Clearly, genuine recorded FDI into China is overstated to the extent that total foreign direct investment includes round-tripped funds coming from tax havens," said Kar.

The financial flows reflect widespread frustration with China's government-controlled financial system, which channels most bank lending and other benefits to state-owned companies at the expense of savers and entrepreneurs.

The government has eased some controls by allowing families to move more money abroad to buy real estate or make other investments and reducing the number of approvals required for companies to invest abroad.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) ? Sheriff?s deputies arrested a teacher at Collinsville High School on Thursday.

DeKalb County Superintendent Charles Warren says Broox Goza, 37, was arrested about 12 p.m.? We understand Goza is a computer teacher, and was arrested in his classroom.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said Goza, of Gadsden, is charged with harassing communications.? Harris said a someone filed a report about a week ago against Goza, concerning harassment and harassing communications.

During the arrest, Sheriff Harris said deputies ?found more evidence of other possible offenses that could lead to more charges in the future.

?This situation involves adults only and no allegations involving students or juveniles were made,? said Sheriff Harris.

Superintendent Warren said the school system will place Goza on administrative leave until further notice as they evaluate the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

The Four Opportunities HR Must Seize Today to Succeed Tomorrow

A lot of time is spent fretting over the role of human resources, both what it does today and what HR will be tomorrow.

I?ve always thought the role of HR was pretty simple ? find great talent, hire great talent, nurture and grow great talent ? but too many people (even a lot in HR themselves) don?t necessarily see HR as the go-to place when it comes to an organization?s talent.

That?s why this new study from The Conference Board and McKinsey & Company, titled?the State of Human Capital 2012, is so important, because it lays out?four (4) specific opportunities that human capital (HR) executives must seize if they are to effectively manage the global talent pool in an unpredictable business environment. They include:

1. Look ahead: anticipate and plan for the human capital of tomorrow ? ?From the increased presence of the highly connected Millennial generation to the proliferation of the virtual office, tomorrow?s workplace will look very different from today?s.?
2. Secure a steady, reliable pipeline for today?s skilled workers, and tomorrow?s leaders ? ?The war for talent continues, spurred by relatively high growth in emerging markets and the mismatch between worker skills and jobs in most regions of the world.?
3. Develop strategies to re-energize your employees about what they do, and about what the organization stands for ? ?An engaged workforce can drive financial performance. Studies have shown that employees who are truly engaged are more likely to stay and contribute to the organization.?

An MIT study shows that agile organizations grow revenue 37 percent faster and generate 30 percent higher profits than non-agile organizations.?

Why HR has struggled

?In today?s global marketplace, particularly in such a hostile and unpredictable business environment, it is imperative that human capital executives and departments place themselves at the heart of strategy development conversations,? said Rebecca L. Ray, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Human Capital at The Conference Board, in a press release about the report.??Human Capital functions need to break out of their comfort zones, take risks and become a true business partner.?

Although I found the four opportunities that HR must seize interesting, the most intriguing part of the study to me were the listing of reasons why HR has had such limited progress in achieving the tangible results that it needs to deliver. See if you find any of these reasons oddly familiar:

• A lack of capability. From the report: ?Human capital professionals are still unable to confidently and assertively solve business issues with line leaders and define the subsequent HC (human capital) implications.?
• A support function mindset.??From the report: ?Human capital staff continues to have a support-function mindset, a low tolerance for risk, and a limited sense of strategic ?authorship.? These attributes often result in relatively low status among executive peers, no budget for innovation, and a ?zero defects? mentality that means they rarely takes chances.
• An inability to relate the ROI or business impact of their function.?From the report: ?The difficulty many human capital professionals experience in talking the business language of ROI prevents them from gaining buy-in for innovation, no matter how much it is needed.?

?A real struggle to make a strategic difference?

?Right now, human capital departments are struggling to deal with a global talent shortage, adapt to a changing workforce, and develop new, flexible working models to meet the needs of tomorrow?s workers,? said Bryan Hancock, a Partner in McKinsey & Company?s Atlanta office, in the press release about the study.

He added: ?Human capital departments and executives are also facing a real struggle to make a strategic difference in their organizations. Only by partnering with other parts of the organization will they be able to address critical business issues with long-term, systemic impact on human capital.?

You can find a copy of the report here, and if nothing else, it is a sobering reminder of what you probably already know: HR needs to be a more business-oriented partner that is willing to take prudent risks and tackle the human capital needs that are going to be the key to driving our organizations ahead tomorrow.

But if you manage to get your hands on a copy of this report, be forewarned; it is a pointed and unvarnished detailing of the why HR doesn?t function right in most organizations, and what needs to be done to fix that and get things on the right track.

Don?t dig into it unless you want to be confronted by these uncomfortable truths ? and, if you are finally ready to do something about them.

In an age where documentaries are becoming the place to go for those interested in investing their time & money in the company of thoughtful and watchable subjects, The Eye Has to Travel is yet another welcome addition to that list.

It's informative and not uncritical, touching as it does in an affectionate manner on her authoritarian personality and her somewhat cavalier attitude towards matters of fact and the history of fashion.

Guido Daniele is an italian painter and illustrator based in Milan.

In 2000, Daniele started creating his ?Handimals?, in which he applies body painting techniques to hands, poses them in positions that, along with the painting, result in images that resemble animals, portrayed with a wonderful sense of dynamics.

He has extended this to painted hand images of monuments, flowers and other objects, and his images in this series have been in demand for advertising and commercial clients, including a series for the World Wildlife Federation.

Despite rap sheets an arm?s length and reputations for cruelty, there?s something almost romantic about the gangsters of the 1920s. With a flair for the dramatic and personalities that dominated both the news and gossip columns, these men firmly put a mark on Prohibition history.

Many mobsters, however, chose to live their daily lives rather anonymously in homes more fit for the family man than the big ?boss.?

We?re touring the homes of some of the biggest names to grace the FBI Most Wanted list. Grab your fur coat and felt hat, but keep it down; we don?t want any stool pigeon ratting to the coppers about where we?re going.

Al Capone

Al Capone?s first home in Chicago was relatively modest for someone dealing in some pretty lucrative (but illegal) business. The mobster lived in the home when he first moved from New York to the Windy City. Capone lived in the Park Manor home until threats to run him out of town sent him to Florida.

The 4-bed, 2-bath home, pictured below, was last listed for sale for $450,000 in 2009.

While Capone ruled Chicago, Benjamin ?Bugsy? Siegel ruled New York, and then later moved on to L.A. and Las Vegas. Siegel created an empire of bootlegging and gambling, and began one of the first organized hit companies ?Murder, Inc.? before he settled in Los Angeles. In L.A., Siegel rubbed shoulders with the celebrity elite, even dating a few starlets, as he also planned to expand a gambling empire in Las Vegas.

Although his business was in Vegas, Siegel preferred estates in Hollywood, where he threw lavish parties.

Siegel had one of his homes, pictured above, built for his wife and children in 1938. Siegel never moved in, preferring his other home, Castillo del Lago on Mulholland Drive.

And of course, Siegel was infamously murdered in the rental home, above, of his girlfriend Virginia Hill at 810 Linden Dr, Beverly Hills in 1947.

Ma Barker

Ma Barker was fresh off a string of high-profile robberies throughout the Midwest when she and her son Fred headed down to Ocklawaha to hide out. The two posed as a couple needing a vacation rental, but the FBI caught wind of the Most Wanted woman?s plans and surprised the Barkers with a 7:15 a.m. shootout. The five-hour melee killed both Ma and her son, and the volley of bulletholes left behind are still visible in the 4-bed, 2-bath home today.

Much of the home, actually, is frozen in time from the 1935 shooting. Still owned by the family who once rented the place to the Barkers, the property recently hit the market as an non-MLS listing, with a suggested starting price of $1 million.

George ?Bugs? Moran

Capone?s biggest rival and the other man responsible for much of the heyday of Prohibition crime, George ?Bugs? Moran preferred to live in a hotel suite. The leader of the North Side gang ? Capone led the South Side ? Moran had a reputation for his violent temper, earning him the nickname ?Bugs,? slang for crazy. A bit of gangster lore: Moran was the actual target of the Valentine?s Day Massacre, but he was at a coffee shop next door when the shooting happened.

Moran lived at the Parkway Hotel. Today the hotel has been converted to the Pierre Condominiums.

Johnny Torrio

Before there was Capone, there was Johnny Torrio, an Italian-American mobster who is credited with beginning the Chicago gangster scene in the early 1920s. Torrio hired Capone back in New York, and when Torrio moved to Chicago, he took Capone along and eventually handed the entire business over to Capone after surviving a drive-by shooting in front of his home on South Clyde Avenue.

Torrio moved out of his home and left for Europe, only returning to New York to testify for Capone during his tax evasion trial.

Frank Rio

Like Torrio, Frank Rio was a gangster closely tied to Capone, and he?s believed to be the person who carried out the Valentine?s Day Massacre. He was described as one of Capone?s most loyal and trusted hitmen and was once considered to be the successor to Capone, but he rather slowly stepped back from his involvement in the mob and died of a heart attack in 1935.

A while back the guys on the forum put together a great list of energy saving tips. These are simple things that you can do pretty much right now, or maybe right after a quick run to the home improvement store for supplies. These aren?t huge projects that take weeks to complete. They also aren?t horribly expensive things to do. These are the basic and cost effective things you can do to cut those energy bills.

For the blog purposes, we?re going to break it down into sections because it is a fairly long list. We?ll also provide links to examples throughout the site.

Please keep in mind that this list was intended to grow over time as we think of new ideas. Feel free to recommend things to be added to the list.

We?re going to start out with air sealing as its the biggest problem in most houses. Thankfully, its also the easiest and usually cheapest place to start improving things.

Bulldogs Salute 1980 and 2011 Ivy League Champions

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The celebration of the 40^th anniversary of Yale field hockey takes center stage this weekend. In addition to the 40^th festivities, which include golf, an alumni game/tailgate, a special dinner and brunch, there are two games: vs. Penn at Noon on Saturday and vs. Albany at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. As part of the weekend, the Bulldogs will pay tribute to their 1980 and 2011 Ivy League championship teams.

Field hockey at Yale began as a club sport, and after it became a varsity sport the Bulldogs quickly made their mark. After winning one game as a club team in 1971, Yale increased its win total for the next five straight years, culminating with a 10-4-2 mark in 1976. The 1980 season marked another high point, as Yale won the Ivy League championship in just the second year of the title's existence.

With last year's Ivy title, in a season that saw the team set the school record for goals (69), the Bulldogs have now come full circle as they look ahead to their fifth decade. They enter this weekend coming off their best two-day offensive output of the year, as they scored six goals on their road trip to Dartmouth and Vermont last weekend. That included a dramatic game-winning goal in overtime at Vermont from junior forward Brooke Gogel (Bronxville, N.Y.), who had scored her first career goal the day before.

Gogel and junior midfielder Erica Borgo (Randolph, N.J.) both scored a pair of goals over the weekend. Borgo has now moved into the top 14 all-time at Yale in assists (25, tied for 5^th with Jan Colarusso '82), points (59, 11^th) and goals (17, tied for 14^th with Cat Lindroth '08). Borgo leads the team in points this season (4-1-9), followed by senior midfielder/back Mary Beth Barham (Fairfax, Va.) (3-0-6) and sophomore forward Jessie Accurso (Jamison, Pa.) (2-1-5). Junior forward/midfielder Emily Schuckert (Wilmington, Del.) leads the team in assists with three.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Cain (Laytonsville, Md.) is 16^th in the country in saves per game (7.0). She has a .712 save percentage and a 3.82 goals-against average.

Penn (6-6, 1-3 Ivy League) gave Yale the biggest scare during its five-game league winning streak en route to earning a share of the Ivy title last year. The Quakers had a 1-0 lead until the 45 minute mark, when junior forward Gabrielle Garcia (Garden City, N.Y.) got the game-tying goal off an assist by Taylor Sankovich '12. The Bulldogs got the game-winner 10 minutes later, when Borgo scored on a spectacular backhanded shot to the top corner off an assist by Kirsten Krebs '12. That wound up being the only win by fewer than two goals among all of Yale's league victories last year.

The Quakers have continued to improve under third-year head coach Colleen Fink, and one more win this season would enable them to equal their total from the previous two seasons combined (when they went 7-27). Midfielder Sarah Hasson (6-4-16) and attacker Elizabeth Hitti (5-6-16) lead the team in scoring. Goalie Carly Sokach has a .708 save percentage and a 2.84 goals-against average.

Albany (8-7, 1-2 America East) edged Yale 4-3 in overtime last season, with the Bulldogs getting two goals from Erin Carter '12 and one from Dinah Landshut '12. The Great Danes' record is deceptive; Albany has played six games against nationally ranked teams and gone 2-4 in those games, with each loss by just one goal. Corrine McConville (10-2-22) leads the team in points. Kristi Troch has a .686 save percentage and a 1.78 goals-against average.

Every goal Yale scores this season brings the world closer to a cure for myotonic dystrophy. Senior goalkeeper Ona McConnell (London, England) has been diagnosed with the disease, the most common form of muscular dystrophy. The Bulldogs are taking pledges for a season-long "Goal-a-thon" as part of their "Get a Grip" campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation. New way to mimic the color and texture of butterfly wings

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? The colors of a butterfly's wings are unusually bright and beautiful and are the result of an unusual trait; the way they reflect light is fundamentally different from how color works most of the time.

A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has found a way to generate this kind of "structural color" that has the added benefit of another trait of butterfly wings: super-hydrophobicity, or the ability to strongly repel water.

The research was led by Shu Yang, associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science, and included other members of her group: Jie Li, Guanquan Liang and Xuelian Zhu.

Their research was published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

"A lot of research over the last 10 years has gone into trying to create structural colors like those found in nature, in things like butterfly wings and opals," Yang said." People have also been interested in creating superhydrophobic surfaces which is found in things like lotus leaves, and in butterfly wings, too, since they couldn't stay in air with raindrops clinging to them."

The two qualities -- structural color and superhydrophobicity -- are related by structures. Structural color is the result of periodic patterns, while superhydrophobicity is the result of surface roughness

When light strikes the surface of a periodic lattice, it's scattered, interfered or diffracted at a wavelength comparable to the lattice size, producing a particularly bright and intense color that is much stronger than color obtained from pigments or dyes.

When water lands on a hydrophobic surface, its roughness reduces the effective contact area between water and a solid area where it can adhere, resulting in an increase of water contact angle and water droplet mobility on such surface.

While trying to combine these traits, engineers have to go through complicated, multi-step processes, first to create color-providing 3D structures out of a polymer, followed by additional steps to make them rough in the nanoscale. These secondary steps, such as nanoparticle assembly, or plasma etching, must be performed very carefully as to not vary the optical property determined by the 3D periodic lattice created in the first step.

Yang's method begins with a non-conventional photolithography technique, holographic lithography, where a laser creates a cross-linked 3D network from a material called a photoresist. The photoresist material in the regions that are not exposed to the laser light are later removed by a solvent, leaving the "holes" in the 3D lattice that provides structural color.

Instead of using nanoparticles or plasma etching, Yang's team was able to add the desired nano-roughness to the structures by simply changing solvents after washing away the photoresist. The trick was to use a poor solvent; the better a solvent is, the more it tries to maximize the contact with the material. Bad solvents have the opposite effect, which the team used to its advantage at the end of the photolithography step.

"The good solvent causes the structure to swell," Yang said. "Once it has swollen, we put in the poor solvent. Because the polymer hates the poor solvent, it crunches in and shrivels, forming nanospheres within the 3D lattice.

"We found that the worse the solvent we used, the more rough we could make the structures," Yang said.

Both superhydrophobicity and structural color are in high demand for a variety of applications. Materials with structural color could be used in as light-based analogs of semiconductors, for example, for light guiding, lasing and sensing. As they repel liquids, superhydrophobic coatings are self-cleaning and waterproof. Since optical devices are highly dependent on their degree of light transmission, the ability to maintain the device surface's dryness and cleanliness will minimize the energy consumption and negative environmental impact without the use of intensive labors and chemicals. Yang has recently received a grant to develop such coatings for solar panels.

The researchers have ideas for how the two traits could be combined in one application, as well.

"Specifically, we're interested in putting this kind of material on the outside of buildings," Yang said. "The structural color we can produce is bright and highly decorative, and it won't fade away like conventional pigmentation color dies. The introduction of nano-roughness will offer additional benefits, such as energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.

"It could be a high-end facade for the aesthetics alone, in addition to the appeal of its self-cleaning properties. We are also developing energy efficient building skins that will integrate such materials in optical sensors."

The research was supported by the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.

Olympus SP-620UZ

In many ways, the SP-620UZ ($199.99 direct) is similar to another Olympus superzoom, the 24x SZ-12 . Both cameras produce solid images at lower ISO settings, suffer at higher settings, and are limited to 720p video capture. The SZ-12 is a bit smaller, and is a slightly better camera overall, but fans of AA batteries, and the flexibility they can bring, will want to opt for the SP-620UZ. Neither camera can compete with our Editors' Choice superzoom, the Nikon Coolpix P510 , but that camera costs more than twice as much.

Design and Features
The SP-620UZ is just 2.9 by 4.3 by 2.9 inches (HWD), but is pretty heavy for its size at 15.3 ounces. It's not pocketable, but is tiny compared with some other superzoom models like the huge Fujifilm X-S1. That SLR-sized shooter packs a slightly more ambitious 26x zoom lens, but comes in at 4.2 by 5.3 by 5.9 inches in size and weighs 2.1 pounds.

The 21x zoom lens covers a 25-525mm field of view, an impressive feat for a camera of this size. Zoom is controlled electronically, and the action is quick and smooth. You'll use the rear LCD to frame and review images, and it's one of the weaker spots of the camera. It's big at 3 inches, but the low 230k-dot resolution makes it difficult to get a good idea of what your photos will look like. The pop-up flash is controlled manually?just flip it up with your finger when you want to use it, and close it when you don't.

The camera itself has a deep grip that accommodates the four AA batteries that power it. It doesn't extend out from the body quite as much as the lens. Controls are fairly minimal?there's a Power button on the top plate, situated a bit behind the zoom rocker and shutter control. There are only a couple buttons around back?Record, Play, Menu, OK, and Help. A four-way controller surrounds the OK button; it's used to navigate through the on-screen menu that gives you access to shooting controls.

Advanced shooters won't want to consider this camera, as there are no Manual, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priority modes available. There is a Program mode, in addition to iAuto and Scene Modes. You can adjust Exposure Compensation and White Balance in Program, but not much else. There are also the standard Sports, Fireworks, Cuisine, Portrait, Landscape, and similar scene modes. Perhaps in an attempt to keep up with the latest Internet pet photo trends, Olympus has added separate settings for dog and cat face detection?satisifying cat lovers and dog shamers alike. There are also in-camera art filters, a panorama mode, and the now-standard 3D capture mode

An on-screen Guide mode helps casual photographers get the best photos possible. You can page through common questions, like "Why are my pictures blurry?" and the camera will adjust settings to address the issue.

Performance and Conclusions
The SP-620UZ performs quite admirably, especially considering its low price. It starts and shoots in 1.9 seconds and records a short 0.2-second shutter lag. Its shot-to-shot time is 1.3 seconds at full resolution, but it can capture 5-megapixel images at about 4.6 frames per second, and 3-megapixel shots at an impressive 14.9fps. It's actually a better performer than our Editors' Choice compact superzoom Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V , which takes 2.3 seconds to start and notches a 0.3-second shutter lag, and its 10fps full-resolution capture mode is limited to a burst of 10 shots.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the SP-620UZ's lens. The results were impressive?it manages 2,365 lines per picture height, which is well in excess of the 1,800-line score that denotes a sharp photo. It didn't fare as well in terms of image noise?its CCD sensor could only keep noise below 1.5 percent through ISO 400, and even at that setting the detail of photos was noticeably degraded. It does a much better job at noise control than another AA-battery-powered CCD superzoom, the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS??its photos are noisy at ISO 100.

Video recording is a weak point. The quality is limited to 720p30 in MP4 format, and the camera is incapable of zooming in or out while recording footage. You'll need to set the desired focal length prior to hitting the record button. The camera does a good job refocusing during recording, but the footage itself has a grainy look?even under bright studio lights. There is a micro HDMI port to connect to an HDTV, as well as a proprietary USB port. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.

The Olympus SP-620UZ is a mixed bag. Image quality in good light is great for a point-and-shoot camera.
