Getty Images

A co-ed event to raise awareness and funds for a great cause,?the annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Light the Night Walk will feature both the Siena Men and Women?s basketball teams along with the cheer squad as well. The event takes place on the academic quad at the center of the school?s campus.

Several players from each team will participate along with men?s coach Mitch Buonaguro, who will speak to the crowd.

Last year, thousands around the country participated and the event has helped raise millions to fight blood cancers. More then 185 communities took part last year in the Light the Night festivities. The night is not only one of remembering and raising funds but also a celebration of those who have fought different types of blood cancers and had success doing so.

Last year nationwide Light the Night events raised over $50 million. For more information you can call the NY chapter of Light the Night at (518)438-3583.

The Carb-Sane Asylum: Does a high animal protein/fat diet forestall ...

Not for Mongolians.

Mongols eat a diet largely composed of milk products, meat, and fat from free-ranging, organic, grass-fed animals. They consume few plant foods because few edible plants grow in the cold continental climate of Mongolia. The climate forced them into a natural experiment in low-carb nutrition based on grass-fed animal products.
I have an interest in Mongolians because there's definitely some influence of these people in my husband's ancestral line. ? I went looking for any peer review literature that might address the Mongolians and found an interesting article. ?But before that, I also found some other info. ?Don points out in a note to WAPF (presumably aimed at their promotion of raw milk) that the Mongols boiled their milk and made cheese from it. ?But one of the accountings of the diets comes from the WAPF site: ?Diet of Mongolia. ?

Like many other developing countries, Mongolia is falling prey to Western influences, however, so it is difficult to determine how much influence these foods are having. ?Still, in the WP article one has a picture painted of a gluttonous, slothy and very dirty culture that was historically healthy. ?I dunno about the lazy factor -- they describe the men as basically trotting around from place to place to supervise herding -- but they do also describe harsh winters and arduous treks for long distances. ?I don't know how many of you have ever ridden an animal, but sitting on one and riding is not quite the same as lounging in a recliner! ?But anyway, they eat and ate a lot of meat, apparently mostly mutton, and relish the fat. ?They eat the entire animal (which prompted my cheeky tweet about Enjoying Entrails, because there's much talk about consuming the entrails in various accounts, and while paleos and others are high on liver and other organs, and they eat a lot of bacon, but I don't hear a lot of chit chat about chitterlings -- pig intestines, pretty readily available -- on the paleo menu!) including the blood. ?Now the current diet, particularly in the more urban areas, contains flour, but there is more than one mention of millet consumption in the traditional accounts.

The traditions of using, producing and preparing these foods are stronger outside the main cities, where the population is more reliant on the vast herds for food. B. Baljmaa (Mongolians generally use their first names), a dietitian and nutritionist at the National Nutrition Research Centre, says there is a genetic compatability for the food.

"Before 1992 there wasn't much research in this area. But now we know from our research that Mongolians are better able to absorb foods with more acid. So, traditional food should be kept in the country."

Meat & fat heavy diet is more acidic? ?I'm not so high on that whole acid/alkaline thing, but just thought I'd pass this info along in case there's anything to it. ?

The study surveyed almost 10,000 participants aged 25-64 years old (5433 Mongolians, 4539 Cambodians). ?From the abstract:

Mongolia has higher prevalence of CVD risk factors than Cambodia ?hypertension (36.5% versus 12.3%),?diabetes (6.3% versus 3.1%), hypercholesterolemia (8.5% versus 3.2%), and overweight (52.5% versus 15.5%). The?difference in tobacco smoking was less notable (32.1% versus 29.4%).

Those are some pretty substantial differences! ?Interestingly, in the full-text we find that the Mongolians have a lower percentage (6.5%) of physically inactive people than the Cambodians (9%). ?Someone get on the horn to Gary Taubes. ?So what do the Cambodians eat? ?According to the WFP?{emphasis mine}:
The two key staple foods in Cambodia are rice and fish: rice supplies about 75 per cent of total caloric intake, while fish (from inland water courses and paddy fields, as well as some marine supplies) provides the main source of protein. These are supplemented by maize, root crops (cassava and sweet potatoes), mung beans and groundnuts. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are produced in Cambodia, though the consumption of vegetables by the rural population appears limited since surplus supplies are often sold rather than consumed. Sugar-palms and sugar-cane are also grown, as are coconuts, pepper, cashew nuts, coffee and oil palms.

Cattle and buffalo are mainly raised for their draught power or as capital savings, although some beef is consumed. Pigs, particularly, are raised for meat, and are an increasingly important source of protein. Chickens and ducks are raised to supply eggs as well as meat. In some parts of the country (particularly forested areas), hunting and trapping of animals are additional sources of food, despite attempted restrictions on hunting.

There are pockets of Cambodian refugees here in the US, having fled the Khmer Rouge. ?Here are two articles from WA (general) and MA (peer rev). ?It appears many of these US-Cambodians retain much of their traditional diet. ?Some quotes from the first article:

Cambodians in Seattle often carry on the nutritional traditions of their homeland - much of the Cambodian diet is based on foods readily available at home. An extensive assortment of greens and tropical fruits were grown in gardens or gathered from wild plants. Poultry was raised on rural homesteads. Fish - cheaper than coveted beef and pork - was popular for main dishes, sauces and soups. These food items remain popular with Cambodians in Seattle.

The shelves of local Cambodian markets in White Center and the Rainier Valley are crammed with bottled sauces and canned fruits, 50-pound bags of rice, noodles, cookies, candies and teas. Freezers? are filled with catfish, mudfish, shrimp and eel. Marinated quail wings soak on ice and barbecued chickens hang by their feet. Impulse items - fried bananas, sticky rice wrapped and tied in banana leaves, plastic cups of sweet rice and green rice flour noodles - await hungry shoppers near cash registers.
... The Cambodian diet is naturally nutritious, full of fish and other seafood, vegetables and fruit. Unlike the average American diet, Cambodian meals are generally low-fat and low- calorie. Local Cambodians say there's not much in the diet to watch out for. Still, locals say some older people splurged on more fattening foods after immigrating to Washington - they weren't accustomed to watching their diets in Cambodia and were deprived during the war. One local grocer said many Cambodians become more health conscious after immigrating to America and learning about fatty foods and cholesterol. Still, he said, "Some cannot resist the pork even though they know it will give them problems later."
Fish and meat with rice and vegetables is considered nutritious. The concept of "junk food" is not the same in Cambodian culture, though coconut is cited as very fattening. ... ?Jackfruit, durain, longans, lychees, coconut, mango, papaya and bananas are also commonly eaten fresh for dessert. Coconut milk with banana, sugar and tapioca is another favorite, as is sticky rice filled with pork, jackfruit or banana.
Interesting that now they avoid, but splurge, on fatty foods due to American influences, but didn't need to watch their diets in Cambodia because of lack of food in a war torn country. ?Still ... lots of rice! ?And some of it sticky -- guess how it gets that way?? ?One last cite, this one abstract only on a study on teens of SE Asian descent in the US:
Food preferences, beliefs, and practices were assessed among 207 Southeast Asian refugee high school students, all of whom had been in the U.S. five years or less. Questionnaires typed both in English as well as their native language of either Cambodian, Vietnamese, or Hmong, were administered to all students in a classroom setting. Results indicated Southeast Asian refugee youth have maintained strong ties to their native foods and traditional meal patterns. In the U.S., as in Southeast Asia, rice remains the staple food in their diet. High status foods in Southeast Asia such as fruits, meats, and soft drinks remain highly preferred in the U.S. While milk is well-liked, cheese remains a strongly disliked food item. Fruits and vegetables are frequently consumed. Nutritionally weak American foods such as candy bars, cake, and potato chips are not consumed frequently. However, soft drinks are consumed daily by almost one-third of the students. Breakfast was missed by almost 60% of females and 37% of males. Forty-five percent of the youth reported they had primary responsibility for evening meal preparation.

Interesting ...

OK, back to Asia. ?I think it is fair to say that the Cambodian culture may well have been contaminated by Western influences moreso than Mongolian culture in that CVD comparison study. ?But these cultures were clearly adapted to vastly different diets -- I find it somewhat amusing that the Mongolians dislike fish, while the Cambodians dislike cheese. ?But which "base" is better resistant to obesity, either with changing lifestyle (urban life) or cultural dietary contamination? ?It would appear the low fat high carb fares far better than the meat and fat eaters. ?Same for diabetes and CVD. ?Three-fold greater incidence of hypertension and obesity, and two-fold higher incidence in diabetes in fat-based Mongolians as compared to carb-based Cambodians. ?Such things are truly difficult to dismiss.

Might be some lessons to the 80/20's out there (that would include me!). ?On a personal note, I am not a huge meat and animal fat eater, but significant amounts would be a good description. ?I have to admit that I think about trying a pescetarian experiment from time to time (I could not be a vegetarian, even an ovo-lacto) but I find myself getting anxious at the thought of eliminating all butter and land animal meats for even a single month. ?Does that sound familiar to what LC'ers chide folks about when they are faced with giving up carbs? ? Is meat addictive then? ?I dunno about that ... but if a sign of addiction is an unwillingness or angst about giving something up for even a time, perhaps!!

Songs in the key of sea

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Soft horns and a tinkling piano form the backbone of "Fifty Degrees North, Four Degrees West," a jazz number with two interesting twists: it has no composer and no actual musicians. Unless you count bacteria and other tiny microbes, that is.

The song is the brainchild of Peter Larsen, a biologist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Larsen, it turns out, has no musical training at all; his interests run less towards the blues and more towards blue-green algae.

When faced with an avalanche of microbial data collected from samples taken from the western English Channel, Larsen recognized he needed a way to make sense of it all. "Thinking of interesting ways to highlight interactions within data is part of my daily job," he said. "I am always trying to find new ways to visualize those relationships in ways so that someone can make relevant biological conclusions."

Listen to examples of microbial bebop: http://www.bio.anl.gov/microbialbebop.htm

In the case of the western English Channel data, however, Larsen decided that a visual representation of the data would not be as effective as one he could hear.

"There are certain parameters like sunlight, temperature or the concentration of phosphorus in the water that give a kind of structure to the data and determine the microbial populations," he said. "This structure provides us with an intuitive way to use music to describe a wide range of natural phenomena."

A colleague of Larsen's suggested that classical music could effectively represent the data, but Larsen wanted any patterns inherent in the information to emerge naturally and not to be imposed from without.

"For something as structured as classical music, there's an insufficient amount of structure that you can infer without having to tweak the result to fit what you perceive it should sound like," Larsen said. "We didn't want to do that."

While this is not the first attempt to "sonify" data, it is one of the more mellifluous examples of the genre. "We were astounded by just how musical it sounded," Larsen said. "A large majority of attempts to converting linear data into sound succeed, but they really don't obey the dictates of music -- meter, tempo, harmony. To see these things in natural phenomena and to describe them was a wonderful surprise."

According to Larsen, the musicality of the data is not limited to the organisms in the English Channel. In another set of analysis, he and his colleagues used a similar methodology to look at the relationship between a plant and a fungus.

"We expect to see the same intuitive patterns recurring in different environments," he said. "Sometimes, it can sound a little avant-garde, but it's not random because it reflects very real phenomena."

News in Brief: Japanese lab lays claim to element 113

Chemical catfight looms over naming rights

Web edition : Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Bombarding a bismuth target with a blisteringly fast stream of zinc ions has yielded strong evidence for element 113, a Japanese team reports online September 27 in the Journal of the Physical Society of Japan. The report is the second claim on element 113 by the Japanese team and will eventually be evaluated along with competing claims by a Russian-U.S. team.?

Researchers first caught a glimpse of the element in 2003 (SN: 2/07/2004, p. 84), when a Russian-U.S. team witnessed 113 in the aftermath of collisions that produced element 115. As the short-lived element 115 disintegrated, it cast off the two-proton/two-neutron combination known as an alpha particle. The loss of two protons bumped its atomic number down to 113. The team, from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California also reported creating 113 in 2007 by bombarding neptunium with calcium.

Now researchers at the RIKEN Linear Accelerator Facility in Japan report creating 113 and cleanly document its disintegration. The team hopes that establishing this decay chain will give it the prestigious naming rights to the element, but the Russian-U.S. team also reported a decay chain in the 2007 results. Until naming rights are determined by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, which could take years, the element will continue to be known as ununtrium, the IUPAC stand-in name meaning one-one-three.

Miami's GENTV revamps Hispanic programming ... - Rapid TV News

Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 27-09-2012

WGEN-TV (GENTV), the Miami-based independent Hispanic TV channel, has announced a new brand image and tagline, La Diferencia Se Ve (See the Difference), to go with new programming featuring locally produced newscasts, entertainment shows, telenovelas and other programs developed for South Florida's Latin American viewer.

Television newscaster Maria Elvira Salazar will lead the line-up with Maria Elvira, a one-hour programme to cover the latest headlines impacting politics and society. Meanwhile, Ricardo Brown and Andrea Linares will report on the latest news and information with two daily local newscasts.

GENTV will also include locally produced shows featuring new television personalities, such as Alain Pupo, who counsels celebrities and viewers alike in life lessons.

"Our new programming lineup of news, entertainment, blockbuster films and highly rated telenovelas from Latin America will attract younger viewers who seek relevant local shows with a strong Latin American connection," said Roy Meyeringh, GM at GENTV. "Our research shows a significant gap in relevant programming for this diverse Latin American viewer."

GENTV also will premiere Mis Doctores, a daily show that covers a variety of health topics, and family-oriented programming, including Club 10, one of the most popular and successful children's programs in Latin America, and Popcorn TV, a family friendly video compilation show comprised of gags and bloopers. Meanwhile CineMAS will offer a block of both Hollywood movies and Latin American films.

The channel will also show three Brazilian telenovelas: Prueba de Amor, Salvaje and Pasiones Prohibidas.

"The emphasis is on shows and stories that have real significance to Hispanics in South Florida," Meyeringh said. "Regardless of Latin-American country of origin, GENTV programming recognizes the audience's unique sensibilities and diverse points of view."

Goodell: 'Never want to see a game end like that'

Rex RyanAP

When Jets coach Rex Ryan told Joe McKnight that he?s been traded from the offense to the defense, McKnight took that as an indication that he?s not good enough as a running back.

Ryan says that was the wrong message for McKnight to get. Instead, Ryan thinks McKnight should take it as a compliment that the coaches think he has the talent to move to cornerback, even though he hasn?t played there since high school.

?I think Joe misunderstood,? Ryan told reporters today. ?We?re trying to teach Joe our defense. The coverages and things like that. He still has a role on offense. It?s not that he?s being forgotten as a running back, that?s not the case. I want him to learn the coverages and things like that on defense. The way the league is now, you almost can?t have enough corners. They?re going three, four, five, receivers or something, so you have to be able to match up. The one thing I know from a physical standpoint, [is] that Joe can, from a talent and a physical standpoint, he can match up. He can run. He?s got size. He?s got some natural instincts, and that?s what we?ve seen. When we used to put him on scout team, that?s what we saw. Yesterday, he actually picked off all three quarterbacks. That?s a good thing and a bad thing.?

Ryan heard that McKnight took it as a criticism of his ability as a running back, and that he thinks he didn?t communicate well enough to McKnight.

?That was certainly not the message that I wanted to send to him, so I wasn?t clear on that,? Ryan said. ?He?s got talent as a running back. The one thing I know about Joe is when given an opportunity, as a kick returner, he led the NFL as a kick returner, so I think that?s pretty impressive. He was the number one kid in the country coming out of high school. His talent is pretty special. I had a coach from USC tell me that the day he walked on campus he was their best corner. They wanted to play him at running back, but that?ll give you an indication of the kind of talent that Joe has.?

Ultimately, a player?s job is to play whatever position his coach tells him to play, and if Ryan thinks McKnight can help the Jets more as a cornerback than as a running back, then McKnight is a cornerback. McKnight shouldn?t have a problem with that.

A's?rough up?Rangers, trail by only 3 games

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:18 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Oakland Athletics may be able to do better than just get into the playoffs as a wild card.

They might sneak away with a division title if they keep playing like this against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

Oakland led for good only three batters into the game and chased Texas starter Martin Perez before the end of the first inning in a 9-3 victory Wednesday night to pull within three games with seven to play, four against the Rangers.

"To come out there and get these guys was the biggest series of the road trip. These are the guys we are trying to catch," Josh Reddick said. "A lot of people want to say we can get the wild card. We're trying to still win this division. ... It's definitely possible."

The Athletics (88-67) have taken two of the first three games in the series that ends with a day game Thursday. That will also wrap up a stretch of six series in six cities before ending the regular season with six games at home.

"We lost a tough one the first night (in Texas). For me, it was even more important to come back and win the next day and follow it up with a good performance today," manager Bob Melvin said. "Certainly it would be nice to win tomorrow, but at this point, these two games I think were big for us."

The Los Angeles Angels (86-69) remained within two games of Oakland for the AL's second wild card spot by winning their fifth game in a row later Wednesday night, 4-3 over Seattle.

Oakland, which had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. The A's chased Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander got all the way through the batting order one time.

Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland's two triples in the first inning.

After Cespedes' one-out triple, the A's had three consecutive singles. The last was Josh Donaldson's grounder up the middle that then rolled under the glove of center fielder Josh Hamilton for a two-base error, making it 4-0. Derek Norris tripled to left-center on a liner Hamilton appeared to misplay and let get over his head.

While not the best timing for the Rangers (91-64) to play a game like this, Hamilton said they're not panicking.

"It is what it is," Hamilton said. "I'm not going to give in or put my head down or start crying or collapse all over myself, and the team's not going to do that either. Come back tomorrow."

The magic number remained at five for the two-time defending American League champion Rangers, who host the Angels for three games this weekend.

Matt Harrison (17-10), the All-Star left-hander, starts for Texas in the series finale against Oakland, when he will try to become the Rangers' first 18-game winner since Kenny Rogers in 2004. He faces lefty Travis Blackley (5-3).

"If we come back tomorrow and win the ballgame, they leave out of here the same way they came in," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We feel like we're going to win tomorrow. We just didn't get it done tonight."

Stephen Drew had four of Oakland's 16 hits, including a double leading off the game before scoring on Cespedes' triple into the right-center gap.

The only Oakland starter without a hit was No. 9 hitter Cliff Pennington. Even Reddick ended a career-long 0-for-30 slump with singles in the seventh and ninth innings.

Rookie righty Jarrod Parker (12-8) won his third consecutive decision over four starts. He struck out eight in six innings, and his 109 pitches were his most since 111 on June 4, when he threw eight scoreless innings and allowed only one hit against the Rangers in Oakland.

The Athletics set an AL record for striking out the most in a season with their 11 against six Texas pitchers. They have 1,333, nine more than Tampa Bay had in 2007, and they still have seven games left.

"Despite that number, we're having a great year and winning some ballgames," Reddick said. "Just kind of throw that stat out the window as long as scoring runs."

A night after Yu Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and Scott Feldman and five other relievers were needed in a 10-inning loss, the Rangers were already back in their bullpen before the end of the first inning.

Wilmer Font, the third Texas pitcher, walked the only two batters he faced to start the third before Drew's two-run single made it 7-3. Moss doubled and scored on a single by Norris an inning later.

Parker walked leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus doubled off the left-center field wall. Michael Young and David Murphy had consecutive singles to start the second, scoring on a fielder's choice grounder by Mitch Moreland and a sacrifice fly by Andrus that made it 5-3.

Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning was the third of the game for the A's, and pushed them past the 2007 Rays. Oakland already is well past its previous franchise mark of 1,226 strikeouts in 2008.

"At this point, it just kind of goes with the territory," Melvin said. "At least we're not hitting into double plays."

NOTES: Oakland is 51-25 since the start of July, the best record in the majors over that span. ... The A's are 8-7 against Texas this season. ... The start by Perez was the shortest for a Ranger since July 2, 2011, when Derek Holland also got only two outs facing eight batters against Florida. ... Perez got his first major league victory on June 30, against the A's at Rangers Ballpark. ... Yoshinori Tateyama struck out four in 2 1-3 innings, and was the only Rangers pitcher who didn't allow a base runner.

Mix and Chic: A product review- Packaways!

Packaways?are a new type of reusable plastic storage box that sets up automatically and knocks back down flat for space-efficient, out of the way storage when not in use. Packaways are ideal for all kinds of applications: home organization, basement or garage clean-up, moving, back to school, kids toys, seasonal clothing storage, sports?equipment,?etc. All?Packaways?products are made in USA.
Initially, I was sent the wrong samples but they sent me the right ones promptly. Now, that is great customer service! I received the Tote Packaways?and Under Bed Packaways?for this review.

The Tote Packaways:

The Tote Packaways, measuring at 18"L x 13"W x 11-3/8"H is lightweight and came with two erasable panels for labeling your items. There is one panel at the front and another panel at the side. I like that you can easily see the labels however you choose to store your box. Isn't that thoughtful and convenient?

Another panel at the side of the box.

I use the Tote Packaways to store my son's seasonal clothing. He has a lot of sweaters and jackets so I am thrilled to free up some space in the dresser.

It collapses flat when not in use.?

The Under Bed Packaways:

The Under Bed Packaways is huge, measuring at 36"L x 24"W x 6"H.

Like the Tote Packaways, it came with two erasable panels, one at the front and one at the side of the box.

I use the Under Bed Packaways to store my bulky sweaters and winter jackets. I have a lot of them so the under bed storage really comes in handy.

The lid lies flat when it's not in use.

The same goes with the box.

Overall, I am pleased with both my?Packaways?products. Made of tough corrugated plastic, they seemed pretty durable. I also love that they can be easily set up with no tape required and can be reused again and again. (I love anything that can be recyclable!) The added bonus is they can be stored?conveniently and efficiently in tight spaces. What's not to love?

*I?received this product to review for free and was compensated but the views and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Are you a fan of the?Packaways?as well? How would you use them if you have one??

Easing German inflation still above ECB target

BERLIN (Reuters) - Inflation in the euro zone's largest economy of Germany slowed in September, but not by enough to support the case for a recession-fighting interest rate cut by the European Central Bank.

Preliminary data showed annual inflation slowed to two percent on seasonal factors such as reduced food and travel costs, matching a Reuters consensus forecast. The measure fell from 2.1 percent in August when it jumped on energy prices.

The European Central Bank aims to keep inflation close to, but just under, 2 percent in the euro zone as a whole.

"Over the past two to three months, there has not been a trend of price easing in Germany which would catch anybody's attention and influence the debate at the ECB over rates," said Holger Schmieding at Berenberg Bank.

"The Bundesbank would still say it is at 2 percent, which is the upper limit of where it is allowed to be, so nobody will use it as an argument for a rate cut."

For much of last year Germany's inflation rate remained above 2.0 percent, as its economy outperformed that of its peers, fuelling robust wage rises across many sectors.

This posed a dilemma for the ECB, struggling to balance monetary policy for Europe's largest economy and powerhouse with policy for the struggling southern periphery.

Germany is now beginning to feel more of the pain from the euro zone crisis as weaker demand in austerity-hit countries weighs on exports. A survey on Monday showed business sentiment dropped for a fifth straight month in September, raising fears of a recession.

But economists said inflation, which regained momentum in August after briefly dipping below the 2 percent mark in the summer, looked unlikely to ease sustainably any time soon. Energy and food prices, as well as the ECB's policies and a pickup in the economy, all risked fuelling price pressures.

"We are sticking to our forecasts for inflation of 2.0 percent this year and 2.1 percent next year, but we do also see upward risk at the moment," said Thilo Heidrich at Postbank, mentioning oil and food prices, which "could rise due to many droughts in various parts of the world".

INFLATION RISK

Oil prices have shot up since June with international sanctions hitting Iranian exports and the U.S. central bank launching fresh stimulus measures, which tend to boost commodities.

Meanwhile, food prices have risen after the worst drought in half a century in the United States and poor crops from the Black Sea bread basket hit corn, wheat and soybean supplies.

Berlin and the Bundesbank have hinted they would tolerate higher prices as long as euro-wide inflation remains under control. That could help ailing euro zone countries boost their competitiveness.

But a Reuters poll of 41 economists shows data due to be released on Friday will likely show euro zone prices rose 2.5 percent in September.

The ECB kept its main refinancing rate at a record low of 0.75 percent at its September policy meeting, and ECB Executive Board member Benoit Coeure on Sunday downplayed expectations for a near-term rate cut, saying recent economic and inflation data do not justify it and confidence was returning.

On a monthly basis, German consumer prices were unchanged in September, according to the preliminary data from the Federal Statistics Office.

Consumer prices harmonized to compare with other European Union countries were unchanged on the month and rose 2.1 percent on the year, down from 2.2 percent in August.

The Statistics Office's preliminary inflation calculations are based on data contributed by six German states. Final German price data for September are due to be released on October 11, the office said.

Inflation had only accelerated in one of the six states, in Baden-Wuerttemberg, for the most part slowing on lower food and travel costs.

Sometimes entrepreneurs are the eternal optimists, and perhaps that?s a good thing, because they will take risks that normal people might not take. Without these entrepreneurs who go for it, we wouldn?t have many of the things that we have in our society today, those things which make our lives easier, and help us live a comfortable lifestyle, and maintain a positive quality of life.

Still, what I?ve found as the coordinator for a think tank which operates online is that many of these entrepreneurs are coming up with ideas and eco-innovations which simply do not have the proper return on investment, and they are too apt to have catastrophic failure. Consider if you will that many of the wind turbine blades have broken, and they cause an unbalanced system, and then they rip the rest of the system apart in a fiery mess.

Not long ago, I was talking to the business manager for an interesting concept of a donut shaped wind turbine generator which would be flown at altitude like a kite. This makes good sense, although unless it is built in a way which will allow it to work with 100% uptime, much the same as a nuclear power plant, a coal-fired plant, or a hydroelectric plant then it may not be able to compete in the real world against those other technologies.

Therefore, I asked the business manager if they had plans in case of various calamities. Things such as;

1.-If there is a solar flare which takes out all the power, could your unit still operate or would you be dead in the water because the tether power line would be toast as soon as you launched it?

2.-What about Lightning? How are you dealing with that?

Now then, it is possible to build a system which could handle a severe solar flare or solar storm, using military grade electronics. Although that raises the cost as well, and remember in business we are worried about return on investment, and even in the alternative energy sector where there are subsidies, someday that thing has to make a profit.

Likewise, there are sophisticated systems and airliners which discharge lightning when it hits the plane. These types of systems could be employed on wind generators, which are a loft or airborne attached to a long power cord. Of course, any lightning rod discharge system would have to also come down that power cord, and tethered to the ground. This adds weight to the power cord, and a lot of cost to the device.

You see, fail-safes are needed, and things like this drastically raise the cost of generating power, that is why nuclear power plants cost so much, and why hydroelectricity, even though it uses gravity fed water still costs money, it?s not free. If you are an eco-Innovation entrepreneur, I hope you realize that you can?t make money forever on the taxpayer or government-funded subsidies. Please consider all this.

Scientific discovery offers 'green' solution in fight against greenhouse gases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A low-cost new material that could lead to innovative technologies to tackle global warming has been discovered by scientists at The University of Nottingham.

The porous material, named NOTT-300, has the potential to reduce fossil fuel emissions through the cheaper and more efficient capture of polluting gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). The research, published in the scientific journal Nature Chemistry, demonstrates how the exciting properties of NOTT-300 could provide a greener alternative to existing solutions to adsorb CO2 which are expensive and use large amounts of energy.

The new material represents a major step towards addressing the challenges of developing a low carbon economy, which seeks to produce energy using low carbon sources and methods.

Potential applications

Professor Martin Schr?der, Dean of the Faculty of Science at The University of Nottingham, led the research. He said: ?Our novel material has potential for applications in carbon capture technologies to reduce CO2 emissions and therefore contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

?It offers the opportunity for the development of an ?easy on/easy off? capture system that carries fewer economic and environmental penalties than existing technologies. It could also find application in gas separation processes where the removal of CO2 or acidic gases such as SO2 is required.?

Carbon footprint reduction

The researchers understand the significance of their findings due to the importance of tackling greenhouse gases.

Professor Schr?der said: ?It is widely accepted that it is imperative that the CO2 footprint of human activity is reduced in order to limit the negative effects of global climate change.

?There are powerful drivers to develop efficient strategies to remove CO2 using alternative materials that simultaneously have high adsorption capacity, high selectivity for CO2 and high rates of regeneration at an economically viable cost.?

And NOTT-300 delivers on each of these criteria. Because of this, the new discovery could signal a marked improvement in terms of environmental and chemical sustainability.

The material is economically viable to produce because it is synthesized from relatively simple and cheap organic materials with water as the only solvent.

High uptake of CO2 and SO2

Professor Schr?der said: ?The material shows high uptake of CO2 and SO2. In the case of SO2, this is the highest reported for the class of materials to date. It is also selective for these gases, with other gases ? such as hydrogen, methane, nitrogen, oxygen ? showing no or very little adsorption into the pores.?

In addition to high uptake capacity and selectivity, it is also very easy to release the adsorbed gas molecules through simple reduction of pressure. The material has high chemical stability to all common organic solvents and is stable in water and up to temperatures of 400?C.

Professor Martin Schr?der and Dr Sihai Yang led a team of researchers from the University?s School of Chemistry in conjunction with colleagues from Peking University, The University of Oxford, ISIS and Diamond Light Source. The team used the ISIS facility and the Diamond Synchrotron beam to gain important structural information about how the gases bind to the host material and to understand the properties of the NOTT-300 that make it selectively adsorb CO2 and SO2.

The research was funded by the ERC Advanced Grant COORDSPACE and ChemEnSus, an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Programme Grant.?

Andy Reid Is Mesmerized By Analysis: Your NFL Late Games Viewing Guide [NFL Viewing Guide]

Andy Reid Is Mesmerized By Analysis: Your NFL Late Games Viewing Guide There are three groups of people currently watching football games. The people who just watched their team win and will enjoy the rest of their football watching day. The people who just watched their team lose who will begrudgingly watch football for the rest of the day, carefully planning bathroom breaks around highlights shows. And finally, the people who had to wait three hours for their game to start?which is now! Feel free to swing by the open thread it yak to your heart's content.

Philadelphia at Arizona (FOX): Veteran commenter and football yakker Stev_D has got this game down, in your face analysis style.

Atlanta at San Diego (FOX): This is a beautiful article right here. It is one entire article devoted to the traveling habits of the Mike Smith-coached Atlanta Falcons and how successful it has proven. 5-0 on the west coast! I know what you're thinking, in the five years Smith has been coach there's been some pretty terrible teams out there right? Nevertheless, Mike Smith took a page from the Brian Billick coaching tree (of which current defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is also a member) and has the team travel on Fridays. It's a big help. We know this because someone spent 550 some words telling us. And then Mike Nolan puts the cherry on top the whole thing with the last sentence.

Added Nolan: "The biggest thing is having the better team."

Houston at Denver (CBS): Houston's all like "Man, I sure am glad we don't have to play Peyton Manning anymore." And then Houston's Buddy is all like "Dude, you're playing him this year." Houston: "Shut up, man. He's gone." Houston's Buddy "Check the schedule, holmes." Houston: "What the fuck?? Fucking Goodell, man. Fucking Goodell." Houston's Buddy: "At least he kinda stinks now..." Houston: "[kicks dirt] Yeah, I guess."

Pittsburgh at Oakland (CBS) Remember the Ian Eagle-Dan Fouts comparison from earlier? Well here you go. The shadows of Darren McFadden and Carson Palmer look to get Oakland's first win of the season against the Steelers. Polamalu and Harrison are out again. Rashard Mendenhall is out again. This has a decidedly 13-3 Steelers win feel to it.

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

13 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.
