Toward a better cyanide antidote for terrorist attacks and other mass casualty events

Jan. 30, 2013 ? In an advance toward closing a major gap in defenses against terrorist attacks and other mass casualty events, scientists are reporting discovery of a promising substance that could be the basis for development of a better antidote for cyanide poisoning. Their report, which describes a potential antidote that could be self-administered, much like the medication delivered by allergy injection pens, appears in ACS' Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Steven E. Patterson, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Minnesota Center for Drug Design explain that the only existing antidotes for cyanide -- recognized as a high-risk substance for potential use by terrorists -- must be administered by intravenous infusion. That procedure requires highly trained paramedical personnel and takes time. Cyanide, however, is a fast-acting poison. In a situation involving mass casualties, only a limited number of victims could be saved. Patterson's team thus sought an antidote that could be administered by intra-muscular (IM) injection, a simpler procedure that could be administered rapidly to a large number of victims or even be self-administered.

Their report describes discovery of a substance, sulfanegen TEA, "which should be amenable for development as an IM injectable antidote suitable for treatment of cyanide victims in a mass casualty setting. Further development, including efficacy in lethal cyanide animal models, will be reported at a later date."

Youth Unemployment Will Have Scarring Effect on Canada?s Future Economic Prosperity

Posted on January 30, 2013

OTTAWA? Today?s high youth unemployment rates will have a scarring effect on the future earnings of young Canadians, as well as the country?s greater economic prosperity, said Liberals today.

?A new report from TD Bank has revealed that the continued unemployment and loss of tens of thousands of jobs during the recession has been detrimental to young Canadians, and will have a critical and long-lasting effect on their lifetime earnings,? said Liberal Finance critic Scott Brison. ?Liberals have long been calling for a robust youth employment strategy, yet to this day, the Conservative government has paid little more than lip service to this crisis and ignored the economic needs of young Canadian workers.?

TD Bank estimates that loss of income due to persistent high youth unemployment will cost young Canadians over $23 billion over the next 18 years. This latest report builds on Statistics Canada data that has confirmed unemployment continues to be especially painful for youth, with their jobless rate sitting at 14.1% in December ? a figure twice as high as the national average.

?This Conservative government must take immediate and decisive action to ensure that our youth ? the next generation of Canadian workers ? are not left permanently disadvantaged by protracted underemployment,? said Liberal Post-Secondary Education and Youth critic Justin Trudeau. ?Now is the time to invest in training and education programs, and implement policies that increase labour mobility so young people have a greater opportunity to enter the work force.?

Ford sees $2 billion loss, slumping sales in Europe

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co forecast a $2 billion loss in Europe this year, pointing to a punishing recession that could drive down industry sales in the region to a 20-year low.

By contrast, Ford expects to make more money this year in North America, its most profitable region. But the No. 2 U.S. automaker also predicted 10-percent operating margins in North America, smaller than the 10.4 percent reported last year.

The weak outlook overshadowed Ford's better-than-expected fourth-quarter results, and sent the company's shares tumbling as much as 6.5 percent. At the stock's low point, the declines wiped away more than $3 billion in market value.

The forecast "undercuts the popular investor thesis that Ford offers significant earnings expansion from a booming U.S. auto market while having 'Europe-proofed' its guidance," Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson said in a research note.

It was the fourth time in 12 months Ford ratcheted down expectations in Europe, illustrating how difficult it has been for automakers to predict and manage the rapid deterioration of sales in the region.

Ford expects the industry to sell between 13 million and 13.5 million vehicles in Europe this year. At the bottom of that range, sales in Europe would sink to their lowest level since 1993, according to automotive consultancy IHS Automotive.

"We're likely to see, in the euro zone, a recession for the full year," Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told reporters.

"Clearly, we still have some difficult times in front of us," Shanks said of Europe. "But we do think it will probably bottom this year."

While Ford draws the lion's share of its revenue and profits from North America, Europe is Ford's second-biggest source of revenue. It now expects to lose more in Europe this year than the nearly $1.8 billion loss it recorded in 2012.

Ford shares were down 5.6 percent to $13 on the New York Stock Exchange by early afternoon, the stock's biggest one-day decline since August 2011.

STRENGTH IN NORTH AMERICA

Some investors had been hoping that Ford would forecast North American margins of at least 11 percent for the year, Johnson said. He had predicted Ford would target a 10.6 percent margin, while Morgan Stanley estimated a 10.2 percent.

Still, Ford expects to earn more money in North America this year and gain market share in the United States.

Overall, Ford looks for total operating profit this year to match 2012 levels. In South America and Asia Pacific and Africa regions, Ford expects to break even.

So far, weakness in Europe has been balanced by Ford's strength in North America, which is reaping the benefits of Chief Executive Alan Mulally's "One Ford" turnaround strategy.

Jefferies analyst Peter Nesvold estimated Ford cut capacity in North America by a little more than one-fifth from 2006 to 2009. Higher vehicle prices commanded an additional $10 billion in revenues from 2006 to 2010, Nesvold said.

As a result, Ford avoided government bailouts needed by rivals General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLC in 2009. The North American restructuring serves as the blueprint for Europe's overhaul.

"One has to believe the shares have tremendous upside if Ford comes even close to replicating its North American restructuring success in Europe," Nesvold wrote on Tuesday in a research note.

'TAKING ITS MEDICINE'

Ford reported a per-share pretax operating profit of 31 cents in the fourth quarter, better than the average analyst estimate of 25 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Fourth-quarter revenue totaled $36.5 billion.

Ford spent $1.2 billion on lump-sum pension buyouts last year, but did not say how many salaried retirees took the offer.

Ford earned nearly $1.9 billion in North America in the quarter, almost $1 billion better than the fourth quarter of 2011. It lost $732 million in Europe, much worse than the $190 million loss it reported a year earlier.

But Europe remains unpredictable, Ford and other automakers have said, adding it would take more action if necessary. Ford plans to close three factories and reduce capacity in Europe by 18 percent to save as much as $500 million a year.

In early 2012, Ford estimated it would lose $600 million in Europe and increased that forecast to "at least" $1.5 billion by October. Ford also said late last year that its 2013 losses in Europe would match 2012 levels.

Of the $2 billion in losses Ford now expects in Europe, about $500 million are restructuring costs, CFO Shanks said.

"Ford continues to take its medicine in Europe, while Asia Pacific and South America feel upfront costs as they position for longer-term growth," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said.

Ravens' reputation for gab not yet displayed at SB

(AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens' reputation for trash-talking arrived at the Super Bowl before they did.

While the Ravens were en route from Baltimore to the Big Easy, the San Francisco 49ers were already preparing for war of words with the chattiest team in the NFL.

"Most teams don't really talk that much, but I've heard stories about them talking a lot," San Francisco guard Alex Boone said. "Guys have told me not to get into it with them. We're not here to get into a yelling match."

That might change a bit Sunday when both teams play for the NFL championship at the Superdome.

The Ravens developed their swagger years ago under coach Brian Billick, who rarely backed away from a microphone and made no effort to put a muzzle on his players, most notably Shannon Sharpe and Tony Siragusa ? both of whom are now being paid to blab as television commentators.

Baltimore's current coach, John Harbaugh, doesn't encourage such brashness. But he won't stop it, either. After the Ravens beat New England to win the AFC championship, Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard insisted that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady should be fined for a leg-up slide even though Brady apologized afterward.

Linebacker Terrell Suggs topped that in an interview with Yahoo Sports, calling the Patriots "arrogant" and telling them "to have fun at the Pro Bowl."

Now that he's on football's biggest stage, Suggs has taken it down a few decibels, judging by his tone at Monday's media interviews. Here's a bulletin: He said nothing the 49ers might consider clipping from a newspaper and pinning to the bulletin board for motivation.

"I'm going to talk to you guys with the obligated time that I'm supposed to talk to you guys ... and I'm going to stick to that," Suggs said.

Asked if he might say something juicy later in the week, Suggs replied, "Nothing I do is scripted. You've got to wait and see what I come up with."

It might be worth the wait, although Harbaugh seems to think Suggs and the rest of the team will resist the temptation.

"Our guys are class guys. We'll play with character, we'll play with class," Harbaugh said. "We'll be a tough, hard-nosed football team. That's the way we'll play. Before the game, after the game."

That's not what the 49ers have heard.

"Talk is cheap. I'll leave it at that," linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. "We've all got to play with those pads on. That's what does the talking for us."

Linebacker Ray Lewis does much of the talking for the Baltimore defense. After leading the unit in an emotional chant following each pregame workout, Lewis yells the signals on the field and usually has something bold to say to an opponent he's dropped to the turf.

"Ray and Suggs, they like to talk a lot but they're great players, so it's kind of warranted," 49ers fullback Bruce Miller said.

"I think that's just the way they motivate their team," San Francisco cornerback Tarrell Brown added. "Everybody feeds off that. Whatever works for them, that's good."

When Lewis told his teammates earlier this month that he was going to retire after the current postseason run, Suggs thought the team's vocal leader was merely gearing up for another speech.

"He always talks to the team before the game, the middle of the season and going into the playoffs," Suggs said. "I thought it was another day at the office, but he said some key words. It struck me. He said maybe it was time to start doing something else and it just kind of puzzled me and then it hit me. It really focused our team, not only to get it done for him, but just how precious this time and these moments are. You don't get these opportunities every day."

Lewis may the most prolific talker on the team, but he's not the only one who enjoys yapping. As soon as they got off the plane from Baltimore, Suggs, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Matt Birk, Ray Rice and Joe Flacco were made available to the media.

While Lewis discussed, among other things, his pending retirement, his family and his love for God, Reed talked about everything from his training habits to his experience as a punt, pass and kick participant in New Orleans more than two decades ago.

None of it was going to get the 49ers riled up before Sunday's game, which is just the way Harbaugh likes it.

"I think we're very respectful of our opponents," the coach said. "We always have been, and our opponents have respected us over the years. The team we're playing is built the same way. We've got a lot of respect for the 49ers. We've got a lot of respect for their coach, the coaching staff, their players, and I expect it to be played in that way."

How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

staging entryway edited 1 How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

The Spring market is starting early this year and it?s looking to be a strong market. The inventory is low at the moment, there?s pent up demand and there are plenty of buyers out there looking. It?s still a buyer?s market, but it?s starting to shift now. Soon, more and more homes will be on the market and those trying to sell will need to stay ahead of the competition. One of the best ways to do so is to make your home look its very best. A home staging expert can be a home seller?s greatest ally as they can best tell you how to best maximize your assets.

What is a home stager?

?A home stager is someone who comes in to show your home in its best light. It?s a process of making your home look better for the buyers who are looking at it,? explains Stephanie Barnes a Realtor with ?Fingelly Real Estate, Southport, Connecticut. ?It became popular to hire a stager when the market started its downturn and homes were having a hard time selling. People were looking for ways to compete in the marketplace.? Barnes continues to tell us that home staging is still very popular and is a model that should be continued to be followed whether in an up or down-market. Your real estate company can help you locate a stager or you can do so on your own. A few agencies will provide one for you for an additional fee.

staging home stagers How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

What can I expect when a home stager comes to my house?

A home stager will come to your home for a consult, take an inventory of your home and everything in it. Some charge for that consult and some don?t. With the information gathered the home stager will meet with you, the home owner, and go over the findings. The home owner can then hire the stager to make all the necessary changes, or do so on his own. In this market many people would like to, but do not have the luxury of hiring a home stager. The following suggestions from Barnes will help you, the seller, stage your own home so that you can best represent all the wonderful characteristics of your own home.

staging living spaces How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging our living areas.

According to Barnes, there?s one general rule you should apply to each room. ?You want to show it?s mainstream functionality. If you have an awkward or small space and want to show more functionality than what?s there, you may want to consider turning a dining room into an office.? Something like that, Barnes states, shows really well. ?In a living room you want to show off the size. ?People think more is more when it comes to living rooms,? says Barnes. ? You also want to bring in the most light, you want to pull couches and drapes from windows and you want to show flow in a room.

Artwork should be displayed in a way that is tasteful but not too revealing of your life and lifestyle.? Again, she stresses the idea is to appeal to the masses. You want to create an almost generic, clean and appealing Pottery Barn-like appearance. You do not want buyers glued to your Picasso or family pictures. This is distracting and when the tour is over, the potential buyer ends up fixated on the Picasso or the family photos and remembers nothing about your home. ?Whether your home is formal or casual?it needs to be able to be set up in a way where people can imagine themselves, their family, their friends, clients, bosses? You want to picture where people will be sitting and entertaining.?

People have moved away from wanting to fix up houses. More and more want homes that are turn key and ready to move in. This is why the Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware-like decor works so well. They?re very neural and they appeal to the masses. What?s more is that they can always be added upon and enhanced.

staging dining room How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging our dining rooms.

?Dining rooms are great as they offer one place for people to sit and eat, yet they are often not a highly utilized room in a house so to show it you need to get in the mindset of what the masses are looking for,? says Barnes. It?s a lifestyle choice and decision. ?Generally for each room, you want to stay as mainstream as possible because most people have a very hard time visualizing.? We need to think about those who cannot see past the clutter to appreciate the wide expanse of windows, the particularly nice crown moulding and the little details that might go unnoticed. Barnes best compares it to a retail shop.

?Whoever puts out the best displays moves their inventory fastest. It?s no different when it comes to selling your home.? When you stage your home for selling, you are, to a certain extent, undecorating from the way you live. When you live in your home, you want your home to best represent you, but when you?re looking to sell your home, you need to re-dcorate, or un-decorate, to allow someone else to envision living in your space. This is where stagers come in handy, explains Barnes. ?They have the ability to represent your home and to know what will work and won?t work for show.?

Other ideas for showing dining rooms include converting them into offices, playrooms, or ?a quiet living area off of the noisiness of the room that?s being utilized with the big couch and the TV.? Barnes suggests to ?think outside the box a little bit with the dining space ? ?depending on how you?re marketing it,? she reaffirms how important it is to ?know your crowd.? A young couple looking for their starter home might welcome the dining room for entertaining purposes while a family with young children may welcome a playroom or second living space.

staging master bedroom How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging our master bedrooms.

According to Barnes ?a master bedroom with a bathroom, with both a tub and shower is what everybody wants,? but decor absolutely comes into play here. Barnes suggests removing anything loud and jazzy and going with white. ?White is clean and simple and what?s what buyers are looking for.? She reitterates that ?it?s not about your tastes and your style. The idea of staging your bedroom is to do it in such a way that others can imagine themselves in that space too, a highly private and personal space.?

She then suggests to ?white it out. Realtors will tell you this constantly.? She suggests switching to white duvets and white towels and to make the space seem more hotel-like than private. If the bedroom has carpeting, Barnes strongly advises getting it steam cleaned. Cleanliness is most important. Remove heavy curtains and drapes. If you have no privacy issues, leave the windows empty, otherwise Barnes suggests hanging some bamboo shades.

staging home office guest room How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging our guest rooms.

Guest rooms can be touted as guest rooms and can even be combined with an office. If you use your guest room and are planning on using the guest room as one of the features of your home, you can showcase it much in the same way you would the master bedroom. Barnes mentions the throw pillows and white bedding once more. By showing the room as a combined office/bedroom, you are then maximizing the space in your home. Barnes states that ?once again this depends on the house and the size of the house, and as with the other rooms you need to scale it to your demographic. You need to create the space for people in your price-range.?

staging childrens rooms How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging our children?s rooms.

Children?s bedrooms should be staged much like the rest of the house. The rooms should be as clean and as clutter-free as possible. This may mean tucking some dolls, stuffed animals or toys into some neat bins or other storage area. Barnes believes that like the other rooms in the home, children?s rooms too should be neutral, ?Colors are subjective,? she adds, ?and should really be repainted if they are very bright.? She adds that ?these may be the rooms to paint first, should a home need repainting, noting that smaller rooms are easier and less expensive to paint.?

staging bathrooms How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Staging bathrooms.

The bathrooms should all be as clean and tidy as possible. All personal products such as hair brushes, razors, toothbrushes should be put away and out of sight. Pretty soaps can be placed by the sink and the linens, suggests Barnes, ?should all be white.? Barnes also likes the idea of creating a ?spa-like environment.?

staging curb appeal How to Stage Your Own Home for Sale

Don?t forget to stage the outside of your home too!

?The outside of your home and curb appeal is staging? says Barnes. ?It?s the first impression someone gets when they are coming to your house. They take in whatever is on the curb and they start looking very carefully once they come through the front door.? Make sure hedges are trimmed and tidy.

Make sure leaves have been swept up and put away. Make sure you?ve done your fall clean up or your spring clean up. ?You want your house to show the best it possibly can and if you can?t hire a home stager, your realtors, at this point, have heard enough feedback to know how to help you,? but Barnes believes that stagers are a ?great idea because you?re bringing in a third party who is objective. Often realtors won?t want to say anything you may find insulting. We?re not trying to tell you that you?re doing it wrong or that your taste is bad. No one is trying to criticize you. Realtors know what you need to do, but want to keep their relationship with you.?

Once you?ve heard your stager?s advice it needs to be implemented. A staged home is a home that wants to be sold. It?s sending a message that the sellers are ready and eager to do business, whereas a home that has not been properly staged suggests that the sellers are not ready and could by chance be very difficult. ?A staged home sends a very loud message,? concludes Barnes.

A special thank you to Stephanie Barnes of?Fingelly Real Estate, Southport CT, for her expertise and wisdom.

For example, tower impacts kill more than 2,000 yellow rails per year. That's roughly 9 percent of the total population. Ninety-seven percent of all birds killed are songbirds, especially warblers. The red-eyed vireo suffers some of the biggest losses, some 581,000 deaths annually, though that represents less than 1 percent of its population.

The Southeast and Midwest lead the country in tower-bird collisions. That's because these regions have the largest concentrations of the tallest towers, up to 900 feet high. While all of the more than 80,000 communication towers in North America cause problems, the roughly 1,000 tallest towers cause 70 percent of the bird deaths, luring birds to their doom with red warning lights that are always on.

A partial solution is relatively simple: replacing the always-on red lights with blinking ones could cut the deaths by as much as 70 percent. Otherwise, Twitter could have a monopoly on tweets.

Rocket Internet's imminent launch of Jumia.co.ke could rock Kenya's ...

I?m what you would call a veteran of sorts as far as the Internet in Kenya is concerned having worked for over 15 years in the space in a myriad of companies doing all sorts of Internet things. You could say I know a thing or two about how it all works in this market, from Internet access all the way to selling Internet-based mobile advertising. Therefore, for some inexplicable reason, I still can?t understand why it seems that e-commerce, which is actually old hat these days globally, still has not (really) taken off in Kenya?!

Yes, there have been all sorts of e-commerce start-ups in Kenya which have had varying degrees of success since as far as I can remember but it seems that no one has really cracked it, at scale. This means, building an e-commerce business from the ground up that could potentially tackle the retail behemoths that are Nakumatt, Tuskys and Uchumi. Better yet, what about an Amazon.com of sorts that could take on the combined might of Westgate Mall, Yaya Centre and Sarit Centre, all rolled into one ? as in real SCALE.

I see no reason why this is not possible as all the ingredients are in place. Kenya leads the world in mobile money with over 15 million mobile subscribers having access to Safaricom?s wildly successful M-Pesa. Internet access in Kenya is speculatively thought to be over 10 million users which would imply a penetration of roughly 25% ? it is also fast and inexpensive with the abundant broadband bandwidth on offer. Banks such as KCB and I&M Bank offer locally-based e-commerce packages for businesses that include online payment processing and merchant accounts. Lastly, Kenya as a market generally excels at trade and business so there should be a massive appetite for e-commerce.

However, to be honest, most of the e-commerce businesses in Kenya that are making massive headway at the moment are small to medium sized businesses ranging from the ?mom and pop? variety working from their homes to regular retail businesses that have managed to ?bolt on? e-commerce-based sales online. That being said, its a well known fact that MIH Internet East Africa shockingly shuttered Kalahari.co.ke just over a year ago which until then represented probably the biggest e-commerce play in East Africa. Indeed, Ringier Kenya which has its HQ in Switzerland has been driving e-commerce with its Groupon clone Rupu for the better part of the past few years with a decent level of success. Rupu has also recently expanded to include RupuShops.co.ke and even RupuTravel.co.ke. Not to be left behind, MIH Internet East Africa launched Mocality Deals as well back in 2010 and it has been duking it out with both Rupu and Zetu as the major daily deals web sites in Kenya.

All these developments bring me to the point of this blog post regarding Germany?s Rocket Internet and its imminent launch of Jumia.co.ke as its primary e-commerce brand in Kenya. Jumia is the brand being used by Rocket Internet to roll-out its e-commerce offering throughout Africa. Jumia is already active in Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria where they are doing really well (from what I hear). In Nigeria for instance, Jumia.com.ng has managed to achieve market leadership for e-commerce in a matter of months. Funny enough, I just found out that Rocket Internet has already been active in Kenya with HelloFood.co.ke which lets you order take out via their web site. This service has also been rolled out in other African markets ? it looks like well-established EatIn.co.ke could get ?disrupted? by HelloFood. It seems that no digital business model or market size seems to be too small for Rocket Internet to take a stab at it.

After hearing some rather colourful stories about how aggressive Rocket Internet is in its market growth strategies, Kenya could without a doubt see the arrival of what may potentially become known as ?Kenya?s Amazon.com.? However, it?s still early days for sure and one must imagine that the likes of MIH Internet East Africa and Ringier Kenya as the other ?big boys? in Kenya?s e-commerce space will be keenly watching, and, responding?quickly?to the arrival of Jumia in Kenya. Whichever way this goes, I am waiting to see how well they perform and hopefully, finally, we will see a major e-commerce revolution take place in Kenya.

Crystal Cruises entices bookings through brand ... - Luxury Daily

Crystal Symphony

Crystal Cruises is eyeing affluent travelers by offering exclusive Mediterranean excursions on its spring itineraries that cannot be accessed through other travel brands.

The cruise line?s new collection of experiences called ?Boutique Adventures? will be available this spring for groups ranging from one to 15 travelers on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships sailing to the Mediterranean. Guests will have exclusive access to estates, art studios, museums, castles and businesses.

?Our guests are looking for different ways to experience destinations and they relish insider access,? said Mimi Weisband, vice president of public relations at?Crystal Cruises, Los Angeles. ?We are continually challenging our tour operators to seek out the unusual, experiential, intimate, cultural adventures.

?Our guests do not want a mass-market excursion ? they will pay more for something if it is unique and authentic,? she said.

Cruising the Mediterranean
There are seven Boutique Adventures that guests can choose. The cost ranges from $223 to more than $1,000 per guest.

Travelers can book the excursions online up to six months before their cruise.

The Florence excursion comprises a viewing of the Uffizi Gallery?s private Contini Bonacossi Collection, which is not accessible to the public.

In Funchal, Portugal, guests will have lunch with a local celebrity at Reid?s Palace or visit a family-run Madeiran winery where they will dine with the owners.

During the Rome experience, guests will make their own jewelry with instruction from a former Valentino model who now designs jewelry.

The Corfu, Greece, excursion consists of a painting lesson from the president of the Corfu Painters Society.

In Italy?s Vetriano, guests will attend the opera at Teatro Concordia, the?smallest public theater in the world.

Teatro Concordia

Excursions in Sorrento and Taormina, Italy, comprise?cooking lessons and meals with local, Michelin-star chefs.

In Taormina in Italy?s Sicily region, travelers will be served a meal while watching a classical concert at a Sicilian castle.

Crystal Cruises will promote the Boutique Adventures via its Web site, quarterly magazine and the on-board Shore Excursion team, per Ms. Weisband.

In addition, travel agents will also inform their clients about the experiences.

?The cruise industry has been becoming more aware of the large portion of the affluent travelers who shy away from cruises due to many misconceptions and overall lack of desire to be on-board the mega-ships,? said D.M. Banks, director at?DMB Public Relations, New York.

?Crystal Cruises is always looking at ways to provide the luxuries of cruises, while providing a boutique experience for their guests,? he said. ?This is another example of them thinking outside of the box to truly connect with their guests.

?Affluent travelers are more than happy to pay a premium for superior services and, more importantly, unique and personalized experiences. These intimate and semi-private excursions are great ways for guest to feel more immersed into the culture and destinations while at port.?

Story time
The new Boutique Adventures are meant to align with Crystal Cruises? ?Begin a New Story? ad campaign that launched last year, per Ms. Weisband.

The cruise line rebranded itself during the second quarter of 2012 through an all-encompassing campaign that centers on the notion of the travel journal and encourages consumers to share memories from past cruises.

The marketing efforts focus on cruise destinations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, rather than the amenities of the ship.

Begin a New Story uses multiple channels including print ads with digital watermark technology, brochures, online banner ads, email, video and a smartphone app.

For instance, print ads appear in Cond? Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, Elle D?cor, Food & Wine and Forbes Life.

Consumers can scan the ads with their smartphones to reveal a 60-second video that shows three travelers? experiences in select Crystal Cruises? destinations through watercolor animation.

The brand asked eight watercolor artists to create images that are used in all aspects of the campaign (see story).

?The trend for affluent consumers is more intimate and incredibly special ? both of which are key to these excursions,? Ms. Weisband said.

?Entering someone?s home, sharing a meal with them and just a few other guests, and being able to hear in-depth stories of living and working in that area from your host ? these are experiences that can be deeply personal, bonding and memorable, really expanding one?s understanding of a culture far beyond any info gleaned from merely sight-seeing,? she said.

?Affluent consumers crave such experiences that go beyond the norm, as so many of them travel at a level well above the basics.?

EU Enlists Telefonica, Cisco, HP, Nokia, ARM And Others To Close The 700K IT Job Gap In Europe

Flag of European UnionNeelie Kroes, VP of the European Commission, today announced a new education initiative for Europe with help from Cisco, Nokia, Telefonica, ARM, HP and other tech titans, as well as government and other partners. The aim, she says, is to close what Europe estimates as a 700,000-IT-job gap in the region. One of the first partners, Telefonica, today also announced its own contribution to the effort: an aim to spin out, by 2015, 1,000 new startups through initiatives like its Wayra incubator, as well as training, mentoring, and job placements for thousands of others.

By popular demand, Sony releases Jelly Bean alpha build for Xperia T

By popular demand, Sony releases Jelly Bean alpha build for Xperia T

Because the first time proved to be such a charm for Android developers, Sony's once again offering Xperia owners an official alpha ROM. And this time, it's of the Jelly Bean variety. But before you rush to the source and flash your cares away, there are a few caveats we need to cover. For starters, the price of entry to this Android 4.1 test run is an unlocked Xperia T. Not the TX, not the V, not the S, so don't even try it. You'll also have to sign away your legal right (via the company's unlock utility) to whine and demand compensation should your handset brick in the process. Once those hurdles have been cleared, you're almost home free to flash -- so long as you don't mind an unfinished UI, non-functioning radios for voice, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, in addition to a complete lack of Gapps. Oh, and did we mention your unlocked T won't be privy to the official Jelly Bean update once it hits? Yeah, there's that too. Basically, you shouldn't look to this for a daily driver. In fact, it's probably best to leave this one to the big boys.

Akai launches MPC headphone series, we go hands on

Akai launches MPC headphone brand, we go hands on

Headphones, there's plenty to choose from these days that's for sure. But amongst the celebrity endorsed pairs, and the traditional brands there appears to be a gap in the market. Or, so thinks Akai -- the maker of the legendary MPC line of beat-machines -- as it's extending the brand to include three new sets of its own: the MPC Pro, MPC, and MPC Earbuds. Akai claims the new additions are designed for use with the kit of the same name, but looking at the design, we'd wager it's not shy of taking a slice of the more image-conscious / brand aware market either. The daddy of the bunch is the MPC pro (the lower of the two you see above. These come with 50mm drivers and an over-ear design, aimed at improving isolation. The MPC model (the other pair you see above) sport 40mm drivers and an on-ear design. Both the Pro, and regular MPC editions have a metallic red and silver finish, with foldable ear-cups. The baby of the bunch is the Earbuds edition, and these are designed for "active producers," or dare we say, sporty types too. The ear-hook design is reminiscent of other sports headphone buds to keep them in place. These, however, are Bluetooth enabled too. But, if you're worried about the latency while you're producing on the go, there's a connection for going traditionally 3.5mm-cabled too. Hear more past the break.

When we first heard that Akai was venturing into the headphone market, we can't deny we were a little excited. The idea of something specific to the MPC hardware / music production, and potential for MPC-inspired design tickled us. In reality, it's hard not to think that it's more about extending the brand onto another line of products. The samples we saw on the floor were early prototypes, and not final models, so things may change, but the design and the three tiered approach suggests this is as much about market appeal as it is dedicated producer hardware. The metal finish looked well designed and reminded us of the Beats Pro line (a little too much perhaps). They fold in, which is always handy for easy storage, and there is also a mic for when using with your phone. Wearing them was comfortable enough, but with no audio to enjoy, we're unable to sample how they actually sound. So, if that turns out to be a strong point, we can happily take these as the serious producer headphones they claim to be, until then, though, we're reserving final judgement. Price and availability to follow.
